On October 30th, Arizona Western College performed a one act play based on my short story, "When the Lights Go Dim." The short story concerned the plight of Park Ranger Stan Mitchell and his capture of the mass murderer that the media dubbed, "The Campfire Killer." The problem is that the Campfire Killer is Stan's childhood friend, Johnnie Lee Franklin. Johnnie Lee offers to surrender if Stan will listen to his story.
The story deals with the deep moral dilemma faced by both the killer and his captor. The actors played the characters with depth and raw emotion. The audience was riveted.
"When the Lights Go Dim" is part of the Lake Hope universe and appears in a series of short stories called, The Ghosts of Lake Hope. It will be expanded into a novel next year. The novel, When the Lantern Swings, also began as a short story and is one of the tales in The Ghosts of Lake Hope.
