My Story
Allen Grimes, a retired Special Agent with the FBI and former Akron Police Officer, brings over
26 years of law enforcement expertise to his gripping narratives. As a child, Grimes was inspired by weekly visits to a mobile library where he consumed fairy tales and Gothic horror literature. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass media communication from the University of Akron and has since published works of science fiction and horror in magazines like Nightmares, Potpourri, and Lords of the Eternal Darkness. Crafting compelling tales featuring law enforcement protagonists thrust into extraordinary circumstances, Grimes blends his real-world experience with imaginative flair. His writing reflects a lifelong love for literature, justice, and the possibility of the paranormal.
When the Lantern Swings
Senior Park Ranger and retired Akron cop Ed Freemen came to Lake Hope State Park looking for a cushy “retirement job” until the mangled body of a young woman is found on the old Moonville Rail Trail. The way her remains are spread in two parallel lines makes it obvious that she was run over by a train. But there are no tracks and haven’t been for more than forty years. As Freemen and his team investigate, they come across the legend of a railroad worker killed by a train a hundred years ago and whose ghost returns every ten years to terrorize the guests at Lake Hope. As the body count rises, Freemen’s efforts are hampered by hallucinations stemming from a tragic shooting incident. Freemen must overcome his deteriorating mental state and stop the hulking menace from reaching his diabolical quota. On dark summer nights, the locals tell their children to beware because when the Lantern Swings, Jackie Hudak comes back!

In The Press
When the Lantern Swings is a ghost story on steroids and a refreshing alternative to the slasher genre. The century-old legend of a swinging lantern, a hulking trainyard worker, and a deadly train are reminiscent of spooky tales whispered at backwoods youth camps.
